January 31 - Kiwi Crates

I first saw Kiwi Crates on a pin.  I thought it was such a cool idea and filed it away for later.  A friend sent me a coupon so I ordered one.  The first one arrived tonight, Family Game Night.  Little girl, was confused at first she doesn't normally get packages and I had to convince her this one was for her.  When we opened it she was excited and immediately wanted to open the scissors (the your first kiwi crate gift), then moved on to ripping out the cards for the game, coloring the pieces and the board.  I had to pry the board from her hot little hands before bed.  Excellent, I can't wait to finish everything tomorrow and look forward to playing the completed games with her.  What is better then crafts delivered to your door.  Check them out here...  http://www.kiwicrate.com/

If you want a coupon for $10 off let me know and I will send you one too.

Tearing out the game pieces.

Coloring the board.

January 30 - Does chalk get grease stains out?

Does chalk get grease stains out of clothes?  We shall see.  I am running this test right now.  Chalk on the grease spot before washing, wash, dry, see if it works.  We are currently drying let's see if it works....

There's the pesky stain before.

Chalked up.

It's less noticable but still there.

I am thinking that this would be best if the stain was fresh.  But if you are like me you never realize it's there until the next time you go to wear that shirt or pair of pants.  I would say worth another try with a dustier chalk, this on wasn't very dusty.

January 29 - Braided buns

Playing with your hair is always fun! Today I tries this cute hair style. Lessons learned my hair is thinner then it looks and I would tie my pony tails tighter and closer together next time.

Overall this was cute and different, I receives several compliments which is always plus!

January 28 - Single Serve Angel Food Cake

Sounds perfect right... Total fail.

A few things to think about
- I didn't have lemon juice what difference could a drop make in the long run.
- I am very good at following directions on a recipe but I don't know what a stiff egg white means... Like meringue should I have used a mixer?
- I didn't have a 2 inch ramekin so I used a mug.
- I don't think it cooked long enough. It was a gooey ball but it said 20 mins, so I did 20 mins.

I can't wait to post these pictures it's quite comical. I went to check on it because there was not a cooling time listed (hello I need directions!!) and noticed a greasy ring around the cup so I picked it up and out fell the disappointing goo ball that was supposed to be my tasty dessert.

After laughing at myself and taking a few pictures I decided to try a taste at the top it tasted like an omelet and was crunchy from the sugar. Weird... But the aftertaste is surprisingly angel food cake.

I want to try this again after all I have 7 more servings of mix left. I will have to do some tweaking though.

Whomp Whomp...

January 27 - Sharpie Nail Decorations

This worked fairly well but when I painted over them with clear polish it smeared. Boo! I think this would work well and will try it again but you just have to be careful about how you put on the top coat.

Pardon my paint job I didn't clean up around the edges and its very obvious on my right hand. I used a silver sharpie and gave it some time to dry but it still smeared.  PS: GO RAVENS purple!

January 25 - Two for One Wreaths

I want to make the wreath that made me addicted to pinterest.  (I will leave you all in suspense until I actually start it/get it finished.) So I went out and bought my foam wreath to get started.  Then I remembered this pin.  It makes so much sense, who doesn't want a flatter hanging wreath and a two for one.  I was afraid to cut the foam because it was harder then I thought that it would be but it worked.

My husband doesn't like me using sharp instruments (there was an incident with the apple slicer and my thumb, don't ask it was that dumb) so he actually cut the wreath with a kitchen knife.  He did a great job.  The one that we have is white and comes out all crazy looking when I try to take pictures of it so this is the picture from pinterest but this did work!

January 24 - Magic Watercolor

My daughter loved this project! Draw on a sheet of paper with a white crayon and water color over top of it. It's like "color wonder" but more specific for the child. We made vines, flowers, her name, heart chains. Four thumbs way up from our house!

January 22 - Listening

A busy day, going since 6am and its now 9pm and we are still about 45 mins from home. So as I sit in the car I think what the heck am I going to do today!?

Then it hits me I have all these articles I have pinned as a "pin now read later" so I decided to read one of them I pinned the other day.

It's 5 ways to teach your child to listen. A group of moms put themselves through a training program to basically retrain how they talk to their children. Making it easier for the child to understand the situation and therefore listen to instructions.

As the moms were describing their children I kept saying that's my daughter! Chair jungle gym at the dinner table, 5 more minutes of everything before doing what we ask, whining and throwing a fit when she doesn't get what she wants, issues with sharing with friends. I'm making her sound like a total brat but these are all things she does.

The 5 "rules"
1. Say it With a Single Word - a one word reminder of what needed to be done instead of a long winded speech.

2. Provide Information - instead of no or stop give information. ie: chairs are for sitting. Allow the child to us the information to decide what to do.

3. Give Your Child a Choice - and stick with it! There is a really good example in the article, I'll let you read it there. Basically be ready to make the consequence happen.

4. State Your Expectations - tell them the plan so they know what to expect, what comes next and the outcome. You don't like to do things without a plan in your head either.

5. Name Their Feelings - listen, give them a response that allows them to think about the outcome they want, make it happen. And excellent example about sharing in the article.

I fully intend to try these out. Little one is asleep in the back seat but I feel prepared to deal with her not listening in a more productive way tomorrow. Listening is a skill that needs to be learned, even most adults have trouble just listening. I need to be patient and teach her good skills that she will be able to use all her life.

So not something that I did today but I took the time to read this and learn. I think it counts! It's a great read.

January 21 - Dirty Shirley Temple

What to do the day after a big football win and you have leftover booze?  Make a drink of course.  The dirty Shirley Temple...

Cherry Vodka
Grenadine
7up or Sprite

This is quite tasty.  We didn't have grenadine so I used cherry juice from the jar of cherries, I am sure grenadine is sweeter then this but this is really good.   I am a huge shirley temple fan so this is an awsome adult version.  Yummy!  Now I am going to sit back with my fizzy pink drink and watch the Bachelor.  Don't judge me.  HAHA.

January 20 - Football Snacks!

The Ravens vs. The Patriots playoff game.  We had some friends over to watch the Ravens WIN and WIN they did.   Needless to say we were very happy last night.  We not only had great company and a great game to watch, we had great food!  These are three recipes that I made, two of them for the first time.  All of these are winners and are great for any game day.

Wonton Taco Cups

The hardest part of these lovely little snacks was finding the sinking wonton wrappers.  We assumed they would be refrigerated or frozen with the vegan or pastry stuff.  Two stores and two strike outs only to realize we were looking in the wrong place.  They were in the produce section mixed in the the vegan foods like tofu and vegan-aise, for anyone who can't find them.  I mixed up ground beef just like I was making tacos and added in some black beans when I was done.  Put the wrappers in a mini muffin pan, I did spray mine with pam but we don't think it really needed it.  Top with shredded cheddar and bake for 8-10 mins on 350 degrees.  Top them with your favorite taco fixings - salsa, sour cream, guacamole if you are so inclined.   Delicious, easy and a total crowd pleaser.

Broccoli Cheddar Soup

This is supposed to be a Panera copy cat.  It was good but it was no Panera.  I had help from one of our guest with the constant stirring that this recipe called for so i was able to measure ingredients and not feel rushed and panicked. I did not use the immersion blender or blender because we went to Panera last night and there was a HUGE chunk of broccoli in my soup so I didn't feel this was necessary.  This was good, it tasted a lot like fresh vegetables you could really taste the broccoli and the carrots.  It wasn't as cheesy as I would have liked but it was well received and overall a success.

Firecracker Shrimp

This is the Pioneer Womans's Picture not mine, they are so good I forgot to take a picture.

This recipe is one that a friend of mine highly recommends.  We have made these before and I love them, but since I am sharing and since I pinned this to pinterest I will give you all the link.  These are super easy, marinate, skewer, grill, enjoy.  Sriracha is a winner, nice and spicy!  We grilled these on the george so we didn't have to go outside in the cold and miss any of the game. You have to try this one!

January 19 - Stinky Smelly Towels

I've noticed two of our sets of towels smell awful no matter how many times I wash them. So I decided to try one of the tricks on Pinterest.

Wash once on hot with 1 cup white vinegar.

Wash again on hot with a 1/2 cup of baking soda.

I didn't wash them again and so far so good. No musty stinky towel smell. We shall see if it lasts but so far I'm satisfied.

January 18 - Soda Can Tabs are Straw Holders

Did you know that the soda can tab can double as a straw holder?  It works!  You just have to turn that tab around so it faces backwards (after the can is open of course) ad put your straw though the hole.

I first tried this with a can of lemonade for my daughter and while it worked I realized there was a flaw in my experiment.  Her lemonade had no bubbles!  So back up to the counter I went to get a straw for my own drink.  It worked in mine too, even in birch beer!  No more floating wonky straws in your canned soda.

Also, this worked really well turning the can into a sippy cup for my daughter.  She normally plays with straws and makes a mess.  She did okay with this though.  Overall a success!

I have also done the wooden spoon on a boiling pot, toilet paper rolls on wrapping paper (another "empty" tube of wrapping paper worked better it held tighter, and BONUS cut up one and you have a bunch), rubber band on the paint can, and the staple remover to put keys on a key chain.  All great ideas.  There are on many on this pin.  Life Hacks, got to love it!

January 17 - JalapeƱo Popper Chicken

I love, love, love jalapeƱo poppers! Yum! Cheesy gooeyness with a spicy kick. So when I saw this recipe I knew I had to try it.

I normally HATE cream cheese! Even the idea of it is just gross, but I tried it and this is a keeper!

Cream cheese, cheddar and diced jalapeƱos stuffed into a pocket in your chicken. Bread it and bake. Yum!

The chicken could have been a little more tender, a suggestion/possible change would be to pound the chicken flat and spread the filling on top and then roll it up.  The tough spots could have also been the result of the rapid defrost we had to do because I woke up late, couldn't find my car keys and therefore forgot to get the chicken out in the morning.  Either way yummy baked chicken with a cheesy, gooey, spicy kick.  Delicious!

January 16 - Ring Cleaner

Something easy after a yucky rainy Wednesday! I decided to try this one out because my wedding rings were starting to look kinda yucky.

Dirty Ring - Before

Pretty easy to throw this together because they are common household items.

1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon baking soda
1 tablespoon dish detergent
1 cup water
1 piece aluminum foil

Directions:

1. Heat water in the microwave for 1 or 2 minutes.

2. Cut a piece of aluminum foil that roughly covers the bottom of a small bowl (like a cereal bowl).

3. Pour hot water into bowl. Place salt, soda, and dish washing liquid into bowl. Place jewelry on top of foil and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes. Rinse jewelry in cool water and dry jewelry completely with soft cloth. Discard solution after use and make a new batch next time.

Working it's Magic.....

I hope that you can see the difference.  Here is the after, my nice clean ring.

I think it worked pretty well, there is sparkle there again and my white gold bands don't look so grimy anymore. I have a jewelry cleaner set but if I ever run out of the solution or I'm in a pinch I would defiantly do this again.

I would recommend using an old toothbrush to scrub the jewelry as you rinse it in cold water because there is still dirt on the bottom of the stones and in the small crevices where the cloth didn't reach.  Overall this is a good thing to have in your back pocket for an emergency, also if you want to go green.  You know what is in this cleaner and it doesn't smell as harsh as the bottled on that I have.  Enjoy!

January 15 - New Years Printables

Today I used these with a class combining Harold and the Purple Crayon and New Years Resolutions. Creating your own destiny, get it?

My students liked them and gave me some good answers too! I adjusted the Prediction table a bit to give the kids something they were more able to relate to. More sports less civics/economics.

This one was a lot of fun, never underestimate a child's love of talking/writing about them self.  I got some cute answer and some really off the wall answers as well.

My students don't care what gas prices are and they have no idea what the DOW Jones is, most of them have no idea who Prince William and Kate Middleton are either. We had fun with this though! Excellent answers and a lot of giggles.

January 14 - Knotted Low Pony

Today was hat day at school so I needed a low ponytail style where I could wear my hat but not have hat head all day. So I decided to give this a try.

While people told me it was cute I thought it looked funny by the end of the day because my hair is so curly. It made it look really thin at the ends, my hair was almost too short to do this. I had a hard time tying the second knot. I used a regular black hair tie at the end, next time I would use a clear plastic at the top of the pony tail as well to make sure it stayed tight. The knots stayed well but I don't like they way my hair curled. I would probably straighten my hair to do this again.

January 13 - Burn 100 Calories

Another busy day.  My sweet girl slept until 11am today, I woke up to my husband baking blueberry muffins, went to the book store, shoe shopping, and dinner at one of favorite places.  Home to clean up the house a bit and get the munchkin back into bed. Again leaving little time for the creative pinner but a happy mommy with new shoes!

So I decided to try out one of these quick workout that I have pinned.  This is quick, I timed myself at 2mins 51 secs.  If you go non stop and are a little out of shape like myself you will be breathing hard and you can feel your heart pumping.  Yet, I feel energized and I want to do more.  I'm not going to thought because I know I will regret it tomorrow.  If you did 5 sets of these it would be a great work out, this is also a quick way to add cardio to lifting weights that you don't need any equipment for.  Enjoy!

January 12 - Bed Time Yoga

Weekends are busy with a 3 year old.  This weekend we went to see Monsters Inc in 3D.  She loves to see the movies on the big screen but hates wearing the glasses after the first hour.  What a mess.  Between the movie, visiting a friends precious new baby and a 3 year old who thankful loves to sleep in we didn't get too much accomplished today.  Which also left me little time for my pinterest creativity, so we have to do what we can with the time we are given.

This is a great pin.  It goes to a bunch of links to different stretches and yoga poses you can to in bed to relax and center you for a restful nights sleep.  They were fun to do, easy to do, and once you learned them and made them part of your routine they would/could flow pretty easily together making it a quick nightly ritual.  When you are just starting out it's an awkward struggle of looking at the picture reading the instructions and actually doing the poses.  Overall I did have a very peaceful sleep, and I fell asleep quickly.  I normally struggle to fall asleep and lay there thinking about all the things that need to be done the next day etc.  So for me this was a success.  There will be no pictures of my doing yoga on this blog.  Don't get your hopes up.  LOL.

January 11th - Heart Headband

With Valentines Day rapidly approaching I decided to try a heart headband for Kaitlyn. The instructions say to sew onto ribbon where I normally put things on metal headbands so this was new for me two.

Things I learned:
1) It's really hard to cut identical hearts out of felt!
2) I can't see a straight line, lol.
3) My daughter is the worst model ever!
4) My husband must really love me, he modeled the headband so I could take pictures. Would it have been easier for me to wear it and he could have taken the pictures, probably but he was busy playing with his iPad. :)

Here you go!

January 8th - Name Painting & Pulled BBQ Chicken Sandwiches

Another day home with my "sick" baby. She was supposedly contagious until a few hours ago which means fun at home for the day. I was cleaning up my Pinterest boards looking at what was there when I came across this gem.

We gave the little one 2 canvases to paint for Christmas so I thought why not do it today. (Super Cheap at the Christmas Tree Shop!!) She loved the idea of getting to paint so I set to work. I laid out her name in masking tape and let her pick her paint colors. I swear she picked these all by herself with no influence, in fact I tried to get her to take pink or red and she just yelled at me. (Ha ha!) She soon set to work and before I knew it the whole canvas was covered, she even did the edges.

I set the canvas on the table to dry and after an hour peeled off the tape so you could see her name in white. It looks GREAT!! Just have to wait a little longer for it to dry all the way and find the perfect place to hang it. I'm really happy with this and little munchkin is very proud of herself!

January 7th - Medicine Tracker & Crumble Topped Pot Pie

I wasn't planning to do two things today but when your little ones comes down with strep throat and inspiration hits who am I to stop it.  Little one went to the doctor today and has strep throat and amoxicillin to prove it. Sometimes it's hard for parents to communicated in the hustle and bustle that is getting ready in the morning and bed time.  When I saw this pin ages ago I loved it!  It's so simple and yet ingenious all at the same time.

This is the original, am I have tried to do this before and ended up with charts on the refrigerator that are forgotten and you asre still left wondering if the little one had their medicine or not.  The problem is our pharmacy doesn't use Pinterest friendly bottles when packaging medication.  (How dare they!!)

So this is what I came up with. I used card stock and made a chart for the nest 10 days, dose at the top and used packaging tape to attach it to the bottle.. We can use a sharpie to "x "off the AM/PM dose.  Hopefully because it's IN YOUR FACE we will remember to check it off.

POT PIE CRUMBLE!
Back to the original plan for the day.  I can not stress enough how important it is to read the recipe when you find something on pinterest.  It can be very difficult to find a recipe that you have everything to make and can get done in the time allotted when looking on Pinterest.  For instance this recipe, chicken pot pie with a fun top.

Step one: put in crock pot to cook chicken for 5-6 hours.  WHAT!??  I thought it would say cube and cook checken!  Well I am glad I had time to do this today.  So into the crock pot the chicken went.  "Dice the chicken when it comes out of the crock pot."  Who can actually do that?  Mine always falls apart to shreds, so to save myself frustration I shredded it with 2 forks.

Step two: making the crumble, pretty straight forward.  I don't know what a spilpat is so I used parchment paper.  Do not try to make your sauce (step 3) when this is cooking, you will get distracted and burn the edges like I did!  This was delicious all by it's self, I'm just saying.  Almost like a Parmesan version of Red Lobsters Cheddar Bay Biscuits!  YUM!

Step 3: I think that this basically tells you how to make cream of chicken soup.  My family is not big on peas so I used a broccoli and cauliflower mix.  Its was a crazy process, almost like you need a third hand.  I think that best bet would be to measure everything out and get it ready before you start so you are ready to grab and go.  I also omitted the thyme because I am not a fan.

Anyway, here it is!
Yummy, crumbly topping.

A view of the inside.  It's not runny at all, creamy is a better way to describe it.

I would almost suggest baking it a little longer, leave the topping off and cook for 10 mins or so and then add the topping and bake for the listed amount of time.  The large chunks of broccoli were still cool and everything cooled off way too fast.  Overall I got the husband seal of approval, he says he is not a fan of "baking with Parmesan"  because it smells funny.  He also wants to eat the filling over mashed potatoes.  There was way too much left for just the two of us, so we have leftovers, I see his request becoming a reality.  Overall yummy, this could be simplified by cubing and cooking chicken instead of the cock pot mess.  Enjoy!  It was tasty!
