A busy day, going since 6am and its now 9pm and we are still about 45 mins from home. So as I sit in the car I think what the heck am I going to do today!?
Then it hits me I have all these articles I have pinned as a "pin now read later" so I decided to read one of them I pinned the other day.
It's 5 ways to teach your child to listen. A group of moms put themselves through a training program to basically retrain how they talk to their children. Making it easier for the child to understand the situation and therefore listen to instructions.
As the moms were describing their children I kept saying that's my daughter! Chair jungle gym at the dinner table, 5 more minutes of everything before doing what we ask, whining and throwing a fit when she doesn't get what she wants, issues with sharing with friends. I'm making her sound like a total brat but these are all things she does.
The 5 "rules"
1. Say it With a Single Word - a one word reminder of what needed to be done instead of a long winded speech.
2. Provide Information - instead of no or stop give information. ie: chairs are for sitting. Allow the child to us the information to decide what to do.
3. Give Your Child a Choice - and stick with it! There is a really good example in the article, I'll let you read it there. Basically be ready to make the consequence happen.
4. State Your Expectations - tell them the plan so they know what to expect, what comes next and the outcome. You don't like to do things without a plan in your head either.
5. Name Their Feelings - listen, give them a response that allows them to think about the outcome they want, make it happen. And excellent example about sharing in the article.
I fully intend to try these out. Little one is asleep in the back seat but I feel prepared to deal with her not listening in a more productive way tomorrow. Listening is a skill that needs to be learned, even most adults have trouble just listening. I need to be patient and teach her good skills that she will be able to use all her life.
So not something that I did today but I took the time to read this and learn. I think it counts! It's a great read.
